A Beginner’s Guide to Watches

Whether you are buying a casual watch, a mechanical watch, or even a Quartz watch movement, all of them should be treated with care and respect.

This article will serve as your guide to watches so if you want to be educated about these amazing timepieces, then do read further.

Consider It as an Investment

There are some people that are on the market to look for a watch that simply just tells the time. They usually only set aside a little bit of money because they just want something that fits on their wrist that can tell the time. If you are part of this demographic, then just choose any watch that falls within your budget along with the
features that you really like.

However, if you are going to buy a watch with the intent of making it as an investment; whether you are going to pass it down to the next generation or you want to sell it for a profit in the future- then choosing one that is ideal for such a purpose is equally okay.

Of course, you’d want to set your budget first and foremost so that you can instantly narrow down your options. I suggest that if you are going to buy a watch that is not too expensive, but it will make it a really good investment, set aside at least $1500 to $5000. At this price range, you can have a really luxurious watch that you won’t regret.

Should You Buy Pre-Owned?

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with a pre-owned watch. Unlike buying a secondhand smartphone, watches that age really well are actually more valuable than the new watches. Sure, they might not have those new-age features that you might like, but if you know how watches work, you may find an increased appreciation of watch
movements and the craftsmanship that goes along with it.

Ideally, you want to buy a pre-owned watch that has all of its documents intact. This includes a warranty (if it is still in effect), manuals, and other documents that came along with the original purchase of the watch.

However, because some of the pre-owned watches are about 5+ years old, it is also possible that the documents it came with are no longer available, so it is still okay if the seller doesn’t have them.

Just make sure that if you are going to buy one that you inspect the unit yourself and make sure that it is still working as intended.

Typical Cases

There are watches that are specifically made for a specific group of people. But, for the most part, the round case watches are the most popular since the shape is actually one that fits most people.

The next popular watch case is the square one and fits a lot of real estate on your wrist. This is perfect for people who have larger-sized wrists and want a timepiece that they can easily glance on to tell the time.

Then, there is the tonneau case which is an elegant plane-like design that is typically used in dress watches. Lastly, the cushion is a watch case design that got its design from the pocket watches of old.

Care and Maintenance

Of course, watches can only last long if you provide the necessary care and maintenance it deserves. Make sure that you clean the outside of the watch and have it serviced from time to time to ensure that the inner mechanism is working as intended.
